Fishermen in the Classroom

Updated: Aug 5, 2021

Our kids attend a local daycare center in the Comox Valley. The older classes have an emergent learning program that allows the kids to pick the topics they are interested. The entire classroom is transformed to learn more about whatever topic they choose. One class wanted to explore fishing. The teacher knew just who to contact!

I went into the class of 3-5 year olds and showed them pictures and videos of fishing, explained what the different kind of gear looks like, and answered any question they had. I also brought a prawn trap, a scotchman and some salmon gear (minus the hooks). I left some of the gear for them to continue to explore over the next few weeks. The kids had a blast learning about fishing and made me a special card to say thanks.

We love to educate about our industry and our livelihood. Please feel free to reach out if you ever want us to come and talk about commercial fishing.
